Florida Holly Tree

This is a Florida Holly Tree – photo taken at the Walshingham Park in Seminole, Florida.

This is also called a Christmas Berry Tree or Brazilian Pepper Tree. This plant/tree can withstand a lack of water and requires lots of sunlight.

This is listed in the Prohibited Aquatic Plants for Florida. Why? -  Because it tends to overgrow all other vegetation, can grow up to 10 feet per year, are resistant to flooding and other natural events. The plant will kill other plants by overgrowing other plants in the area and in the process kill the food sources to local wildlife. It is considered a weed.

The Florida Holly tree is not the Brazilian Pepper Tree. The pepper tree is the trouble maker of the bunch because it takes over so easily. The Florida Holly is a beautiful native ornamental.
